According to a recent report by Tetra Pak, 60% of consumers are interested in products with proven medical health benefits and 3 out of 10 people want premium drinks with functional benefits that relieve stress.
Superfoods like baobab fruit, blueberries, garlic, goji berry, green tea, kale and wheatgrass are starting to pop up in all sorts of products and are heavily promoted for their high nutrient content and health properties.
When we’re talking about speciality juice we’re not just talking about the raw ingredients. Juice can be enriched with vitamins and minerals, fibre or protein. These additives aim to address a wide variety of health benefits including heart health, digestion, immune system, bone health, brain health and beauty benefits.
Not only are some juices packed with added extras, the looming sugar tax means products with reduced or low sugar drinks are on the rise and evidenced by a 79% compound annual growth rate between 2012 and 2015.
Whether you want to improve your health by adding enhancements or improve your health by reducing unhealthy components like sugar, there’s something for everyone and something that fits every lifestyle.
Speciality Juice Around the World
Brazilian brand Do Bem provide a range of single juice varieties with no added sugar and blends of fruit and vegetable juices.
Their heritage is in the Rio beach scene where street vendors offer all manner of single variety juices and imaginative combinations of fruits and vegetables promising all sorts of health benefits from hangover cures to revitalising revellers on a night out.
Do Bem offer a number of products with health benefits. Their Vem Meu Bronze juice (which translates as “let my tan come”) is a blend of orange, beetroot and carrot and claims to be good for a healthy immune system and for developing a faster, safer tan.
Amita Motion is a leading juice brand in Greece that offers a vitamin enriched juice. The juice is a blend of nine fruits and seven vitamins. The brand promise is one of physical energy and positive energy. Not only do they promote the health benefits of vitamin enriched juice, they engage with their young audience through strong connections with music. The brand have taken positive energy from juice and launched a major music concert called Positive Energy Day which attracted 65,000 people in 2015.
In the UK, Innocent Drinks have continued to grow and delight customers with their cheeky and cheerful personality. They’ve recently added a range of super smoothies: a blend of fruit, vegetables, botanicals, flax seeds, added vitamins and, in some cases, added protein. These products are designed to energise, recharge, invigorate and uplift – exactly as their names suggest.
Relieve Stress and Revitalise Yourself
Whether you’re shopping for your favourite brands, on the lookout for something new or have a desire to blend your own concoction of speciality juice, there are a number of ingredients to keep an eye on that can help relieve stress.
Stress can manifest as having low-energy, headaches, upset stomach, aches and pains, insomnia and other irritations. Stress can be caused by physical or emotional change or an imbalance in your diet or health.
We chatted to Paula Heaney from Skinny Malinky’s, a cold pressed juice startup from Ireland about the stress relieving benefits of ingredients in their range of products.
“We use lime in our Lean Green, Carrot Kick Start and DiJUICEtive Aid. It contains flavonoids and prevents stress related diseases like high blood sugar.”

According to Paula, almonds, avocados, and blueberries often rate highly in the fight against stress as does turkey salmon and oats.
Orange juice may be the king of juices but there are some other really interesting varieties with extra benefits on the shelves these days.
