By the time the due date rolls around, most expectant mums will have been packing and unpacking their hospital bag constantly for the past few weeks. She’ll have spent a lot of time thinking about that bag. But what about a bag for dads?
There are many essentials that a dad needs to have with him at the hospital. All too often this is overlooked. Make sure you’re one of the most prepared dads and get packing your hospital bag essentials now!
Time Passing Tools
Regardless of what the expectant mum thinks, I can assure you that at some point you will be bored and you will have time to kill. If you have something to distract you, then time certainly passes more quickly. There’s also less chance of getting yourself into an argument with your partner.
The first thing you need to remember is your phone charger. Your phone will be needed at some point. If you want to play games, browse the internet or Google the answers to last week’s pub quiz, you need it charged up. The last thing you need when in hospital is to run out of battery on your phone. This is especially true when the time comes to spread the good news.
I’d also advise having something with you that you can read. If you’re a regular reader then bring a Kindle loaded up with books. If you still read physical books, bring one of those. For dads that don’t read, I would still recommend picking up a magazine or two that you can leaf through. Even if they just kill half an hour, you’ll be grateful.
Food and Drink Ideas
You would rightly assume, when thinking about food and drink in a hospital, that they have a cafe, a shop and various vending machines on site. That’s great for visiting times, but you’ll likely be at the hospital during unsocial hours, meaning the cafe and shop will probably be closed. You also don’t want to be leaving too often. Popping out once for a meal is fine but leaving every hour or so for a snack or drink probably isn’t the best idea.
I would advise packing some snacks in your bag. You’ll need enough for both of you to eat (though leave out chocolate in case it melts). Things like crisps, cereal bars, sweets and fizzy drinks are all ideal to take and will keep your trips to the vending machine to a minimum. You should be able to find time during opening hours to either nip to the cafe, or buy a sandwich from the shop.
Ultimate List of Hospital Bag Essentials for Dad
To round off, here is a list of hospital bag essentials that every dad should pack:
- Portable phone charger
- Kindle/book/magazine depending on your preference
- Money, including loose change for the car park
- Toiletry bag – deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste primarily. I was there for 30 hours and I could use the shower in our birthing suite – if you can, make the most of it!
Start packing now and keep your bag alongside your partner’s so you can take them together to the hospital. While a bag might not entirely prepare you for the life changing events to come, it will at least help keep you happy and relaxed while you’re waiting!
